If they included plenty of RAM to begin with, and didn't make upgrades expensive as hell, I wouldn't care one bit. I suspect 4GB will eventually go the same way. I finally upgraded a friend's machine from 2GB to 8GB recently - didn't even bother with 4GB (which they were still shipping on the Airs, until recently) because these amounts of RAM are so cheap, it wasn't worth saving the few extra dollars. If you're selling machines as expensive as Apple, you should not be selling configs that will be barely usable for the lightest of uses only a year or two later.
We would've had to scrap grandma's 1 year old 2011 Mac Mini (shipped with 2GB) when 10.8 came out if it didn't support upgradeable RAM (even she was complaining about the slowdowns, and all she does is check email, write word docs, and visit the doctor's site - very light usage).
(That's only a few years, which shouldn't be anywhere near EOL.) I've had to upgrade numerous machines from 2GB over the past few years for this very reason, and the 2GB MBAs from that time period are stuck. A few OS upgrades later, and the machine is barely scraping by on that. You know why? Because Apple tends to be stingy with RAM on base configs, which most people have.
